The pinnacle of the kitchen is the cabinetry and layout. If you’re planning to renovate a kitchen, investing in custom kitchen cabinets might have crossed your mind. Many homeowners believe custom-made cabinets are more expensive than commercially made cabinets.
Although this is usually the case, it is not always true. Quite often, custom-made cabinets can be cheaper than you expect if you can find local cabinet makers. But when are custom cabinets worth the extra cost?
Custom Cabinets, Semi-Custom and Stock Cabinets
A kitchen renovation is a serious matter and involves a lot of money. The largest portion of the project investment will go to kitchen cabinetry alone. We highly suggest comparing prices of custom, semi-custom, and stock cabinets for your particular kitchen layout and functionality. The difference between the three cabinet types vary in several ways:
- Stock – Stock cabinets are commercially and mass-produced. They are readily available in home improvement stores and even malls. Ikea is a great example! The homeowner will need to purchase cabinets to fit the design they want and hire a local contractor to install it. Often, the store has their professional crew do the job. Stock cabinetry is the most convenient and generally the cheapest cabinet of the three.
- Semi-Custom – Big cabinetry manufacturers and national retailers also carry semi-custom cabinets. The only difference between stock and semi-custom is that you’ll have the option to choose the cabinet set size, colors, finishes, cabinet door style and some features. It may not be readily available, but once you’ve made your order, the cabinets will arrive at your doorsteps manufactured to your personal liking, choice in material and construction. It is a bit more expensive than stock cabinets, but may be less than custom cabinetry.
- Custom-Made – Custom kitchen cabinets are designed and constructed by hand and machine based on your choice of materials and design. You have the freedom to define the type of wood to be used, color, finish and extra features for more storage and functionality. The choices you can have are endless. The costs are based on the selection of material, personalized design, and labor. The custom-made option may be the only option if you have unusual or non standard spaces or shapes to consider.
Benefits of Custom Cabinets for Your Kitchen
Custom cabinets are worth the extra expense if you plan to stay in your home for years. Custom-made cabinets offer higher quality material which can last longer compared to stock cabinets. Going custom allows you to handpick stronger hardware elements such as hinges and drawer slides.
Custom cabinets can be made to match other parts of the home or furnishing that may not be possible with stock or semi custom products. They can also hide or take advantage of odd shapes or areas in a home that are non standard. In general, if your space is non standard, you need custom cabinets.
Lastly, hiring a local cabinet maker provides a higher level of design support and customer service. They will do site visits on a daily basis, do re-designs when necessary, and you get a more personalized experience.
